As you may have guessed from the breeds name these dogs originated in Germany in the early 1800’s.The Weimaraner was originally bred for hunting in the early 19th century and known as the king of hunting dogs and an ornament of the classic hunting style. Early Weimaraners were used by royalty for hunting large game such as boar,bear and deer. Later in the 1800’s  the Grand Duke Carl August of the Weimar Republic sought to expand the Weimaraner’s function to include feathered game by breeding and selecting crosses with bird-hunting attributes. Nicknamed the Grey Ghost of the forest, because of their “silver-grey” coat these dogs move swiftly and silently through the forests in search of their prey. Most canine authorities conclude The Weimaraner – “Grey Ghost” is the result of selective breeding of Bloodhounds and various hunting dogs including Pointers.

Known for a great temperament as well as very protective of family and children, the “Grey Ghost” is a  very bright and trainable dog.  Weimaraners are fearless yet sensitive, obedient,devoted, sleek,elegant,muscular dogs with friendly dispositions also known as being the “Super-Model of Sporting Breeds” Weimaraners are Extremely Intelligent and were known  in the 1950’s as the “wonder dog” with near human intelligence as they gained popularity in the US.

Before considering the purchase of this breed any potential owner must understand these dogs require regular exercise and mental stimulation. If you do not have the time or desire to own a dog that will get you out for plenty of exercise you might want to look at other breeds. If not given the exercise and attention they crave the Weimaraner can become frustrated and become destructive.

Because of their breeding the Weimaraner – the”Grey Ghost” have a Commanding mentality so training must begin at the puppy stage. The owner has to be willing to put in the required effort in training and exercise these dogs require.  An owner must establish and be the “Alpha” member of the family.
